The iconic fadeaway jump shot in basketball is executed when the shooter gracefully and effortlessly glides away from the defender while still maintaining control of the ball. Inspired by the idea of moving backwards, “The Fadeaway” evokes the history of women’s basketball through a series of handcrafted jerseys, fashion-inspired photography, and a flower-filled backboard. Each of the 12 jerseys (the starting 6s) are meant to represent a specific moment or individual that has made an impact on the game for women.
Inspired by her research into the history of women players, Tolcher was surprised by the restrictive and impractical garments that women were required to wear if they wanted to play. From dresses and bloomers, to dry-clean-only satin, women’s athletic jerseys were designed to protect the “femininity” of the athletes on the court, and often followed the trends (like big collars) within the current fashion.
The artist’s larger-than-life accompanying photographs and video features young, female athletes within a dream-like state. “The Fadeaway” is the of recalling the past, while highlighting the current demand for youthfulness and ability within sport.
