King’s Court

Spring 2025

National Film Board

Director: Serve Poblete | Producer: Kate Vollum

Art Director: Mallory Tolcher

SK and Marley grew up together in Toronto's downtown neighbourhood of Bleecker Street. King's Court offers a fast-paced look at their friendship, families and their journeys into manhood. The National Film Board short film blurs the line between documentary and fiction, immersing viewers in the raw emotions and struggles of two lifelong friends in one of Canada’s most diverse and densely populated neighbourhoods. Through engaging, cinematic storytelling both on and off their favourite basketball court, we root for these inspiring young men in pursuit of identity and self-acceptance.

Rooted in collaboration and storytelling, I was brought on as the film’s art director to help shape the visual world of the story. My contributions included the design and creation of a custom basketball net made entirely of varying sizes of silver Cuban link chains—an object that speaks to themes of pride, masculinity, and resilience. Over several meetings, I worked closely with the creative team to develop the overall look and feel of the studio shoots. I was also on site during production for two intensive days, collaborating with the director and cinematographer to ensure the visual language remained cohesive, textural, and emotionally grounded. The project represents a unique intersection of sport, art, and personal narrative—spaces I continue to explore in my practice.
